Benchmarking

A count tells you what happened. A rate tells you whether it's high.

HIPS turns your injuries into rates and places them among hospitals like yours, using a published method.

How a rate is calculated

Rate = injuriesfull-time staff × months × 10,000

Example: a hospital with 1,000 full-time staff has 12,000 worker-months in a year. 18 patient handling injuries in that year is a rate of 15.0 per 10,000 worker-months.

Rates by job use that job's own staffing count, so nurse assistants are compared with nurse assistants.

Where you stand

Each row shows your rate against the middle half of your peers (25th to 75th percentile) and their median. The peer group is the pooled rate of every hospital in it.

Peer groups you choose

All hospitals, or those of your bed size, census region or facility type.

Always anonymous

You see your own hospital and the group. A group must include at least five hospitals, and no hospital is ever named.
